On March 12, 1938, the German army entered Vienna, thus seizing Austria. The 183,000 Jews of Austria suddenly found themselves disenfranchised, without the power to be employed, have property or use public facilities. Jews were routinely assaulted on the streets and taken from their homes and offices. Thousands emigrated, while scores committed suicide.
